Pitso Modimbura

RHINO MONITORING OFFICER

Pitso is of the Xiriku or Bushmen tribe. He enjoyed a successful career in the Tracker Corps with the Botswana Defence Force, but when his troop was disbanded, his Major recommended him to the Wilderness Trust Botswana Rhino Reintroduction Project as a rhino monitoring officer due to his extraordinary tracking skills.

He is one of the few people who can recognise certain individual rhinos from their footprints and an incredible asset to monitoring efforts.

My people live in harmony with the land. We take only what we need and in doing so help to maintain nature’s delicate balance. I cannot imagine a world without rhinos.”
